  1. ausfire: Thanks. That was my idea behind putting it in there.  I hadn't really looked for ones with or without it, just while making it, it just seemed like it needed something instead of just the tab to go in the hole... so I put the loop in. AFTERWARD, I wondered if it was a common thing I just hadn't seen yet. But when I searched google for images of trammel hooks, I didn't find any with loops. I found some with a T at the top for a lift handle. So then I wondered if I had messed up and there was a reason loops weren't used.

    JimsShip: Thank you sir.

Frosty: Thank you as well sir. I hope it works well for my friend. I am really only a hobbyist. I don't get enough forge time in to worry about "marketable" yet... but I am making notes for the possible 'some day'.

If you're actually putting the refractory in the T you're going to need to wear the dunce cap Mr. McNeil. :P

I need a pic, I'm not seeing what you mean in my dented up head's view screen. Some I get, some is just . . .weird looking.

Neil is saying the 2"T is the Forge. The burner comes in on the drop leg.

  3. I have worked in the fire protection industry for over 20 years. I have personally never seen a portable fire extinguisher lined with anything rubbery. They have to be emptied and visually inspected on a regular basis, checking for rust or other corrosion, as well as hydrostatically pressure tested.

  4. I'm using part of it to build a portable forge, which I'll post pics of when it's ready. The other part (with the pointy bit) will be part of my larger home forge.

    Thanks!

    Jamie

looks like he already knows what it is, and is just curious about what it used to be.

Try to avoid the natural desire to figure out what to do with it and just use it when it or part of it will work for a job. I think most of us who've been at IT for a while have a bunch of "things" we've made because we found a THING that'd be perfect for a . . . thing. I have em all over the place mostly getting in the way.

  5. Not all groups meetings are the same, but as Frosty has been known to point out,"It's probably not a coincidence that black smithing and bull shooting have the same initials."

So, attend the ones you can and garner all the info, wisdom, experience and entertainment available.

  6. Hey guys thanks for the input.....i dont take offence to any of it dont worry about that.....i havent fiddled with it yet my father is in hospital so i really aint worried about the arc welder to much. however tomorow i am going to mess with it for a while i have some free time and at least it will get my mind off things. ill deffinitly look over every ones advice before i try to do some things tomorow thanks again every one ill let ya know what happens

Prayers sent up for your father, you and your family.

  7. I agree with all the above. And want to add, even with all of the dangers everyone is pointing out, forging metal is a LOT of fun. Realize that these guys aren't trying to scare you off (and I hope they haven't) or be mean... They're actually looking forward to seeing you get started and progress. (By seeing, I mean post pics, of all of it. We all love pics) we just want to be sure you're safe as you develop your addiction to hot steel.

  8. Cranky, by 'friendly troll', I meant that maybe the post was made in jest by someone just for fun, like a satyrical story rather than in a disruptive intent.

Wish you luck with this and hope to see pictures, most of the folks on here love pics... even of things that aren't masterpieces. I myself am too much of a beginner to offer expert advice but might chime in with what experience I have garnered. I haven't built or used a sidearm burner, but have built a t-bburner and found it to be super easy to build and tune.

  9. I guess I'm the exception to the rule... my first gasser is made from a 10" dia stainless tank from a soda fountain pump.

To me, this post reads almost like a friendly troll... an attempt at humor along the lines of the parody movies.

Cranky, if I'm wrong about that, sorry.

2 years from first fire to sword is NOT long lead time. That would be amazingly fast-tracked progression.
