So as Royce Unruh said, him and I built new forges this week.I thought I would show mine :)
I had the firepot cut from 1/2 in and the table from 1/4 on a plaz table(royces). All the other stuff was scrap I had layin around.
I decided not to make a clinker breaker on this one because I wasn't sure about some of the details on makin one(aircontrol etc.)
his forge has 3 pieces of mild flat welded across the air hole. Here are some pics
this is without the side gates
thoughts comments or criticism welcome
I will try to post some pics of it with a fire soon

ill put some pics of mine on when I get it completely finished

thanks frosty, part of the reason I took 5 hours is becuz I took my time the other part becuz im not a fast smith yet.
thanks for the tips I will use them,I searched for a cable twist on google and didn't find anything;could you elaborate on the subject a little?

here is a basic blacksmith hammer
40 oz blacksmithing hammer
Find a spring or some other high carbon steel and use that hammer to make your chisels.

I have modified some hf hammers and they seem to work fine

looks a lot like this hammer to mehttp://www.hammersource.com/Ball_Pein_Hammers/8_lb._Straight_Pein_Sledge_32_wood_handle/ (except maye a little smaller).
As for tempering you can forge a mild steel drift then heat the drift and drive it into the eye, watch the colors run until u like them then quench to stop the process.
hope this helps

you could reharden and temper the whole head, but it sounds like you need to read up on that first

yesterday I went to a local smiths shop and had a day of fun smithing/learning,i also made my first hammer :D .
I have a bunch of cummins wrist pins so I figured, why not make a hammer?
First,i drew the billet out on the little giant, then forged the general shape using the power hammer and a hand hammer. Next Makenzie and I took 3 heats(I think)to punch the eye. Then we drifted the eye(probably between 5 and 15 heats)and did final clean up. We then went to the belt grinder for a little bit.
After this we normalized once, then took another heat and quenched into peanut oil.....it hardened nicely with no cracks:)we tempered with a torch;then I went home and handled the thing.
I had a lot of good help from Makenzie and Royce as strikers and lots of advice from makenzie.
The hammer is a little ugly and the eye is tilted one way just a bit,but for a first hammer I think it doesn't look too bad + I learned more yesterday then I have in the last month.
I want to give a big thank you to Makenzie for letting Royce and I use his shop.Everything was very safe, plus he was a great host.I really appreciate smiths that are willing to share their time and knowledge with a new guy to help us grow our abilities.
