old timey trench knife?
Ken -
Not a hit. Just a tap. Watched a demo guy using a 4lb hammer tap every 4th stroke.
Not a mark to be seen. Ever do a rebound test?
Ken -
Sweany, My Websters defines flexible as being capable of being bent. (grin)
Ken -
Mine is a wheel rim with a 4in pipe upright topped with a 1 1/2X1/4 angle iron frame fitted to the forge. solid as a rock. Pyrometer mounted to the post.

I'm with Richard, clean white hands belong in the dishpan and the house.I am a smith also. black hands mean I am working. Calluses mean I an working enough. Scar tissue means I screwed up. (lotsa scars) places we won't get into.

Frosty, Been there. Had to put down 2 of my brother wolves, 2 big labs and lost the boston who after a $1000 stay in the hospital got out and hit. Know the story with the goats as well. Guess we share more than the corner.

Seen better and worse. Vulcans are bottom line anvils. They however are a good starter anvil. My first real anvil was a minty 100lb vulcan sold to a local guy after up grading. I liked it and he still has it( about a yr ) Beats a piece of beam anyday. Enjoy, by the way
mine sold for $200 USD.

A laminate like the old swedish mora knives. 3 layers outsides soft center hard. Bent one
90 and back with out breaking.
Ken -
Bill, the hole(round or square prefered) needs to be tapered. Like an upsidedown funnel or the nail will stick in the hole.

Now Frosty you did tell him to ship it to you. I offered to pick it up and leave him another
and free storage. Guess we need a octagon house for more corners.

I have a 10in wire wheel on a 2 hp grinder you can borrow will make the fingers boney
white. Soft white hands say one thing Hard black hands say another. That gorilla glue is as bad as old grease mixed with old rotilla oil from the tractor. Will wear off in about 2 weeks.(Grin)

I seem to recall that a lot of cannons and cannon balls were (are) cast iron. Have never heard of a base to base or base to block black powder firing causing shrapnel. Sorry but to me thats like saying guns kill people. I have tried for 40yrs to get one of mine to fire itself. I don't shoot anvils but then a lot of you don't shoot, drive MCs,dive or fly. Thomas no offense but have you seen or heard of a cast iron anything blowing up?
I"ll go sit in the corner now.
Ken -
Keith, I am not as bad as frosty i not only will pick it up i will leave you a huge 60lb vulcan.
No storage fees here in WNC.

Small H-Bs bring a good price. I have a nice(now) 88lb. It had a broken horn now replaced. Should be around $3.00 a lb or better depends on local market. I have sold/traded most other brands but my hay buddens will stay. enjoy.

After trying oils and waxes I went to stove black. I liked the way the woodstove looks.

Drifter, I had some 20 yr old Stulz rods both underlay and hard face. Used some as stick
some as Tig (chipped and wire wheeled the flux off) I seem to recall there are several old posts listing other hard face rods and ways to use them.

My gasser sits on a pedestal. Truck rim base. 4in black pipe topped off with a drop in frame for the gasser. No fire worries and when not in use it rolls out of the way.
Ken -
Tis a cast iron Vulcan. NO hope for that one.

1920 should be tool steel from the waist up. Would have 3digit number stamped on heel other side from logo.

Old car guy, The 88 lb H-B the horn was snapped off about 3/8 in past the table.
Located a 3 1/2 in X7 in round drop. Drilled and tapped 3/4 in. Drilled and tapped the anvil same. snugged down a 3/4 stud. V grooved almost to the stud. Welded with 7018.
Set both anvils on a horse. Rough shaped with O/A torch. Finished with grinder. Have had a few old timers not be able to tell which one was hornless. The 142 H-B was welded up with hard face rod. It is a late model with the solid tool steel top.
I do NOT advise doing this unless you or your welder has a solid background.
I have been pushing a weld bead around for about 40 yrs. I do not weld these as part
of my welding fabricating work. If I fail its on me and my stuff. Its also a LOT of time.
I built a track anvil for my first has a horn, table, sq hardy and pritchel. About 35lbs cost
labor and matl. Some where about $750. I won't make another or sell that one.
I also have a 350 amp welder, 9 and 4 1/2 in grindersbelt sanders and a mill. For my own use its worth it. For anyone else thats up to you. PM if you need more.

Will keep that in mind Thanks.

John, Thanks for the update. Had not heard of the Sylva gathering will look for it next yr.
Hi to Tom and Carrie.

John, Is Will Rogers still teaching there. I was in the first class held there. No one showed up at fire on the mountain this year. May try to stop in. I am in the Asheville
area. BTW the forges are modified Mankels.
