I've read the same thing about the ENGLAND stamp being there after 1910-1911....

I came across a stake anvil and stake plate on the net, as I'm a total newb at this I really didn't need it.
But they seem unique enough that I called about it. It wasn't close, but the guy was willing to drive 1.5hrs to meet me in the middle.

I was quite happy he was willing to drive 3hrs round trip for this deal, and got both for $140.
I think the anvil is just over 39" long. The plate has two larger taper pockets and three smaller ones. Should the anvil fig snuggly in to the tapers of the stake plate? I guess I'm wondering if they are made to go with a certain plate/anvil combination.

How is this plate mounted, or used? (...from a total newb here)

After the first go with a wire brush on a drill for quite a while.... now I can see the "PETER" in there too...

I was wondering about that.
Trying to get more info on it, but wondering it they installed a wood shroud over the waist or if it was an attempt at a fix.

This picture is all I have to go on- any guesses?
They say 31" long, but no known weight or make.

Wish I could attend, that would be fun ride.

Drove my baby from Cheeseland to Sturgis and back, 975mi straight thru each way like it is.

Being a total newb at this- I've only had some 1018 scraps to tinker with.

I have my sister's old farm that has a "junkpile" of old metal/equipment/parts that I have yet to see in person.
I mentioned I'd like to get some scrap metal, and I've been told I can pick away at my heart's content.

What sort of things should I look for?
Best types of metal to snag on my picking expidition?

I had a few minutes once I got home to put some WD40 and a wire brush on the side to get a better peek at the stampings.

It's not that I think it is too beat up, but I can't make out PETER. Maybe just that old?
I can faintly see WRIGHT and PATENT under that.
I don't see ENGLAND anywhere. I can make out the SOLID WROUGHT circle stamp, which is above the weight stamp of 1-1-26 or 1-1-20.

There's some stamps on the end of the base, but haven't had time to look too much at that.
If I can strip that streak of paint off the side, that might help too.
Tough to get a good camera shot. Picking up the side shadows seems to reveal the most in person.

Went and look at the anvil after work today. The person selling it said it had been sitting in a barn for a very very long time, hence its condition. Even had pigeon crap on it. It was indeed a PW anvil, but the owner misread the weight stamping on the side.

He had told me earlier 1-0-20 as a stamping, but in actuality it was 1-1-20 or 160 pounds . Had a nice ring on the side when tapped with my hammer. Without clearing any rust or dirt off, I tried my 1 inch hardened sphere bounce test.

Even through the crap on top I still got about 60% to 70% bounce in most places. I plunked down $250 cash as my only offer, and I'm the proud new owner of a very dirty, 160# Peter Wright anvil. My first anvil. :)

Since I have an hour's drive to go see it, I told him I would have a hard time paying $400 with pics I see.
I didn't want to waste his time if he was set on his price.
He says he's already turned down $225 from someone, and says he's firm at $275.

All I have at home is a 1" hardened sphere for a 'ball bearing'. Would you get a decent rebound reading with the rust?

If it proves to be worthwhile, what's the best way to clean something like this up?
Wire brush on a drill?

.....they are asking $400, which I think is way too high for the condition. Am I wrong?

Decent anvils are proving to be tough to find for a beginner that doesn't know any contacts in this field...

But I came across another with pics below. They claim Peter Wright with the markings 1-0-20, which I figure to be 132#?

Is there something decent that could be under the neglected surfaces?
Or don't even bother looking at something like this?

Did that have bolt-down holes that early?

Should thing anvil ring, or won't that happen when it is bolted down to a stump?

He told me 115-120lbs, since he has several anvils and was quite informative, I have no reason to doubt it....
The guy is 6'-3", so his bigger feet/legs may make the avil look smaller.

I was wondering about the shape of that anvil, is that good or bad for general work?
Or what is the reason for the shape?
I think he may take $150 for it if I plunked down some green in front of him.
He told me his wife wants it gone since he spent a goodly amount on his latest 300# anvil.....

TOTAL newb here, I've done machining work for many years, but rarely ever pounded red hot metal.
But I want to now!
Been searching CL for a anvil in my area (SE Wisconsin), and came across an anvil nearby this week.
He had three anvils, and selling two of them off after recently getting a big one.
Owner indicates Armitage Mousehole, but thought I'd post here for any more info or tips about it.

Does this look correct?
