  3. I have a friend who was a metallurgist for a large bearing company over here and he said that small bearings generally had races of stuff like 52100, excellent material for blades but that large bearings were often case hardened 9620 (IIRC) and so not very good material. I wish I could remember the size cut off...

So spark test the *interior* of a large race before using!
Hi Thomas your dead right, fell for that early in the piece forged 2 folder blades out of bearings couldnt under stand why they wouldnt harden
didnt know they did them the crapy way , Check every thing i use now .the old saying once bitten.

  4. Well the blacksmith of old wouldn't have HC spikes around as they date to "modern" times and the use of spike driving machines---he'd have used an old file or horse shoeing rasp...

But the HC spikes compare fairly well with many early medieval blades in carbon content---though the medieval ones tended to have those higher carbon edges forge welded to a wrought iron body.

Now the rail clips generally have about twice the carbon content of an HC spike and "occur in the same general areas" so to speak...
    Hi Thomas
Like this one i made a while ago wrought iron wraped body with file welded in for cutting edge

  5. Photo quality aside, some truly beautiful work! Thanks for posting the abbreviated pic-tutorial! The pictures do clarify the steps significantly. All I need now are are a boatload of skills. : D

Not being jealous, or down on myself, just realistic. ( ; I am absolutely motivated to study those skills I don't possess, and practice, practice, practice.

    All they best, Robert
Hi Robert , Motavation you go it mate .
    Chris

  6. Chris. "hope you like?" Mate, c'mon, how can we not like? You do beautiful work and I for one would like to have a skill like yours. Keep it coming...

  7. Chris not only do you make a fine looking hawk, but you also have the knack for using words in a very eloquent manner!

    Thanks for sharing both! :D
    Hello trying- it ,
I just try to say whats right we all start at the bottom so to speak and i want to try to encourage
people to forge , its not how good you are or how bad you think your work is, its enjoying smithing and showing us all
so everyone can learn and help each other , maybe im wrong but i thought thats what forums are about helping each other .
My privelage to share thank you very much trying- it .And i hope i helped Robert a bit some how.
    Chris
  8. Hi Robert ,
No matter how much icing is on the cake it was still made to be eaten .
if you know what i mean ,

i dont see any point in making a tool if you cant use it some may not see this
but the first purpose is a tool is it must work after that is just cosmetic nothing else A bit like building a house you need a good
foundation then go for it .

I hope i have enspired you in some way to keep forging you will get there just takes a bit of time
and how far you wish to go is up to you ,

I have said to other people dont be impressed by all the leaves on the tree , just because there is more leaves doesnt mean
its a better tree than one with less

I just do the file work by eye have found the chainsaw files seem to work best .
    .
    Thanks Robert keep forging mate
    Chris
