  1. Hey there caver95. Welcome to the site ( and to blacksmithing ). I agree with both Glenn & jimmy. It is fun & infectious. But you have come to the right place. Plenty of knowledgable people & loads of info. What part of Fla are you from? I'm in Tampa. Doesn't seem to be as many blacksmiths in Fla as in other areas of the country.

  2. Welcome Larry! Good to have you here. I am a beginner here also. There are quite a few of us around. It sounds like you are off to a good start on your smith ( and your treadle hammer ). Share some pics if you get the chance. You will find many knowledgable people here who are ready & willing to share their experience(s) to aspiring blacksmiths.

  3. Thank you Pete for bringing this subject up. I am constantly amazed at the wealth of info on this site. I too run a gas forge. I have to admit, I've never thought of the risks that were brought up here. I will definitelly pick up a co detector or two for my shop. It seems to me that a detector is probably the first ( & most important ) tool that that should go into any shop. Thanks again to Pete & all those who have shared their experiences & knowledge.

  4. Welcome Matt !! There are quite a few beginners on this site ( I am one also ). You will find many friendly & helpful people here. Make sure you check out all the various sections of this site. There is a WEALTH of info to be had!

  5. Hey everyone! I'm MRobb ( Mitch Robb ). I live in Tampa, Fla. and am also a beginner to blacksmithing. I took a basic blacksmithing course a year or so ago & have been doing my own thing since. I plan on attending another class soon. I got into blacksmithing sort of by accident. I inherited an old anvil some years back and decided to build a forge "just to see if I could". Well, I'm hooked! I thoroughly enjoy smithing & can't wait to build a permanent shop.
Thanks to all the friends I've made here at Iforgeiron. Your help & support of us "newbies" is appreciated! I've posted a few pics & hope to post many more. Thanks again!!

  6. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Glenn, Andrew & all who work so hard to build & maintain this site. I came to blacksmithing sort of by chance. I "inherited" an old 100# anvil and a couple of hammers a couple of years ago. I have now started to build a small "smithy" of my own. I could not have gotten where I am without this site or the many friends I am making here. Thanks to you & all the others who share their wisdom, knowledge & insite. It has made this site a great source of not only information, but of friendships as well. Thanks again!!

  7. Thanks Peyton for the valuable info. I am new to this blacksmith stuff. I am having a great time going through the info on this site. I have a binder in my shop with material I've printed. It's getting so I'm going to have to start a second binder soon. Thanks again to you, and all others, for sharing your knowledge.

  8. Hey everyone. I am a newcomer to this rewarding obsession called blacksmithing. I have been working at this for probably less than a year. In fact, I just joined this site a couple of days ago. I am still getting used to navigating the site & reading all the usefull information. My thanks to all the experienced & knowledgeable people out there who are willing to help out.

  9. Hey John. You don't know me, as I just joined/registered yesterday. I have been reading over what has been posted. I can't really add anything to all the great advice given so far. Except maybe one thing.
Question. Are you on good terms with your neighbors? If you talked to them (as one person has already mentioned) and explained what you wanted to do, you might then be able to go to your mother & tell her that they don't mind you trying. That would knock one thing off her list of why you shouldn't do this at home.
Also, try making things that she can use around the house. Let her see useful & productive things coming from this. It doesn't have to be anything big.
