  1. It's most probably a Romanian cast steel imitation of an Austrian style anvil, minus the cathedral windows. (It's surely cast . .judging from the shape of the horn and the line down the middle) Romanian made anvils made during the communist period bore no markings. .if they were made for internal use. They were also more functional than aesthetic so only the face was machined. the rest of the body being left as cast. ( exactly like my German double horn - only difference being that that was cast at Topletz) If you found it near you it's probably a "limited edition" model cast in Resita. If so. .keep it well .. Resita was making very good steels back the in the communist period ..although they lost many of their formulas after the revolution.
  2. Okay then!. I'll surely try it a couple of times:)
  3. You should try to target some privately owned decor shops. . .the kind that sell incense and polished river rocks and sand blasted glass and stuff like that ... Women especially will buy anything if it looks like there was a lot of work put into it and there are a lot of hammer marks on it. ..the whole HANDMADE thing is big right now. The work can't have obvious welds ( regular, not forge welds those are nice) or material that's been left as it came from the steel-works. Make stuff look like you shaped them from a meteor in the fire of a volcano under the light of the moon and quenched it in dragon tears. . .( I hope you understand what I'm trying 2 say here.) Also pictures and a website would make you look a bit more official.. Get a fake beard or mustache ( if u don't have one) and take a picture of yourself wearing an apron behind an anvil with something red hot it ure tongs. .and a hige hammer. . .( wearing your apron without a shirt and being a shinny with sweat and coal dust may bring you more than just customers. .but you say ure married..so .:)
  4. If one boils vinegar.. doesn't the acid evaporate? or is the acid the only things that doesn't evaporate. .unlike the water and alcohol? Have you made strong acid by boiling vinegar?
  5. You know .. I'm considered to be a real sick puppy by my friends. .. but I see I've been outdone. .. ( what about it you use a wrought iron or ASO for the job? would that be ok? )
  6. It's an imitation . . cast in a foundry near here. . .or so I've been told .. It follows the German STYLE ..but I doubt it was made in Germany . .. It is still made of good quality steel .. and has a nice ring to it. .
  7. I think it's inspired from old Spanish pattern anvils ..that would fit on the stump like the cap on a soda bottle. .. If you look at Vulcan's main anvil in this painting . ..you would see where Nimba where inspired from. One could defeat this problem with some fancy chisel work on the stump ..so the anvil fits well on it and don;t only rests on the legs. .
  8. I guess that after the anvil is hot enough just rubbing one's skin against it would make the skin stick ..and thus .. with time and a lot of sadism . .a sick person could skin a whole man alive.:D
  9. quite a collection of stake anvils on the floor also . .. .i love those
  10. I used it for mass rust removal ..I keep finding old hammer heads and files in old trunks in the attic ..and wherever i roam in my village ...( when im there. .) I cut the top of a gallon bottle ..put everything in and duct tape it shut. . I call em Blacksmith Pickles . In 2 days . .all the rust and paint falls off and you can clearly see which parts are hardened as they show up black.
  11. I was reading about knives and swords. . .and saw how they're made. ..I thought my usual hammers and RR tracks were enough .but then i started reading more ..and collected everything blacksmith i could find. .and now i have a shop ...but not too much time 2 use it ( school) I still read a lot. .to keep the inner fire going ..and to keep myself from straying from this rather serious hobby ( like i did with the rest ..) that's why i joined this forum actually :D
  12. So basicaly TPAAAT is just going around asking for anvils and leavin your phone nr with people? Sounds similar to what I did. . .got a 350 german one for 150$ cast steel .. virtually unused. . rings like a bell. .. altho it had a huge anchor chain welded on the upsetting block ..and a piece the size of thumbtip was missing from an edge. ( that's a 2 kilo ( 4.4 pounds )hammer on the big one and a 1 kilo (2.2 pounds) hammer on the small one.
  13. I think the first one was there cuz he worked for credit. .. ( it came up in the " what sign should I hang above my shop door " thread. .)
  14. Thx for all the info guys. .. I knew it was dangerous. . but I thought it could be controlable. ..
  15. Cool ..so Thermite would destroy any anvil we would try to repair ..and vaporize us. . . we better leave it to the railroads. ..
  16. Hey everyone ! I don;t know if this is the best place for this thread. . but it has the most people on it at any one time. ..soo Does anyone know anything about welding with Thermite? ( as far as I know that's how they weld sections of RailRoad together seamlessly and it sounds like it could have applications in repairing badly damaged anvils. .and even reattach horns) Has anyone tried it? How do you make it and use it?
  17. Try and find a place where the RR is being renovated. .altho it can be hard. .. All the other suggestions work well too. About cutting them smooth. . .I'm more interested in the Thermite plasma welding . . In fact . .I'll start a topic on that. .
  18. yeah!. .perfect ..try to leave a few nicks in the blade so it "bites" into flesh better:D
  19. I think all swords must be treated in this manner. . maybe not huge spring steel greatswords. . but most of em ...especially knives. .
