  1. Hey everyone, just got roughly 4-5 pounds of satanite and was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to use it. Never heard of the stuff till a while ago and it just arrived after a few months wait in a bulk buy with other people. Looking forward to trying it out so am after some tips to help keep the mistakes to a minimum.

Won't be back for 2 weeks as am going to Tasmania for the holidays in another 2 sleeps.

The steel I have at the moment is a few bars of 1095, 1084, 15n20, bit of 5160 and 52100 left as well as plenty of coil and leaf springs.

  2. Hey everyone, been a while since I started a thread with any of my knives. Here is one I just finished, sorry about the photo I just sent it to the new owner today.

Blade is coil spring, roughly 30mm wide, 2mm thick and think it was 150-190mm long.

Handle is stabilised and coloured resin added and is ringed gidgee.

First time I have done this style of handle, made it a bit thick near the bottom of the handle but hey its my first one. Vulcanised fibre spacers, brass spacer from piece of pipe, black micarta.

Broke two pieces of micarta and made one to loose a fit, this one slid right on and needed a slight tap from the hammer for a perfect fit.

  3. Me, duct tape and extra thick tissues for an emergency bandaid/bandage. Have cut myself fair bit when I was little mucking around with things, find this is great to use. Wrap/plug the wound with the tissue and wrap the duct tape around it, stays nice and tight and can seal the edges too. Will be almost leak proof.

After that if needed get fixed up properly.

  4. WHOOLY XXXX is that fantastic or what. Do you mean that is a chain form a Harley Davidson used to make the sides of the blade, absolutely amazing pattern and colour there. Hope you are very proud of that knife, I would be.

  5. Can just see the hamon it is only a slightly different Shade to the rest of the blade. It actually looks a bit like what happened when I first tried using vinegar on one of my small forged blades to get rid of scale where about half of it( closer to the edge side) went a much darker colour to the rest of the steel. Didn't happen with the others I tried. Was pretty xxxx hard to rub off but did it with soapy water and a cloth.

  6. Looks great for the job.

And Frosty, my grandfather has a story of goats eating that green plastic flexible garden fencing you can buy. After they did that they hopped into this blokes vehicle and ate the seats.

  7. At my club all we have are some large drums, can't remember the size though. Have a upside down rectangular pyramid in the middle with a removable grate made out of thick checkerplate steel. The grate is a hunk of mild with a slot cut out.

Around this it has firebricks on the edges to form a large u shaped area to stop the coke coming into contact with the other bits of metal, to keep it contained and so you can rearrange it to suit your work.

Below that it has a metal pipe put through the back to pump air in, it runs through the drum just under the pot with a slot cut out as well.

The pipe has a chunk of round steel welded to a rod in it which you pull and push to control air flow.

Try and get some pics tomorrow.
