one of the problems with walnut sawdust, if it is used as horse stall bed it will cause the horse founder. dont know if its black walnut, white walnut or what have you type walnut. but it is a major concern.

you really have to watch out. there is a antique shop that i frequent and one of the dealers there had a spatula that was claimed to be colonial and the price matched. however on close observation you could tell that the handle was stick welded to the spatula. there was also a fire place crane that was referenced to mr yellen. it was there for at least two years and then disappeared. its really called buyer beware.

i had been meaning to get prescription safety glasses for quite some time. this past summer i got some extra money ahead and did just that. wasnt as dear as i thought they would be. now wear them 24/7, well not 24 hours a day but every day weather or not im in the shop. couldnt stand the so called safety glasses that fit over regular glasses. too bulky

its a draft horse shoe that has pre punched or drilled holes for removable studs. the holes are tappered. the studs were driven in with a hammer to a tappered fit.

this is very interesting. i really like this forum. i have been everything that a little boy growing up on 1940's and 50's tv wanted to be: started out on family dairy farm, went to navy, saw half  the world, became a cowboy after that, both dude ranch and working ranch type. learned how to shoe horses and made a decent living on that till back gave out, became a firefighter, emt, policeman. then got into railroading, basically was an APE, (all purpose employee), engineer, conductor forklift operator, also worked on steam engines. after retiring about 10 years ago got called back to part time railroad again this past summer and going  back in the spring. 

nice job, das. i will have to give that a try. i do a lot of things with horse shoes. a very versatile metal. Try talking a farrier and see if he will give up his old take offs. carry a 5 gallon bucket with you.

you can also hang a light bulb and reflector right over the water. a 60 watt bulb is all that is needed.

sure looks like a scale weight or could be a counter weight for a handle on a press or something along those lines

i  have also used borium brazed onto a regular shoe and used along with the snoball pads that Frank was talking about. Borium comes in a coarse grain and a fine grain. coarse grain is best for snow and ice, literaly no slippage. fine grain best for excessive wear areas. Borium is some really tough stuff.

I agree with the above. Get it hot, really hot, then hit it. As soon as it starts to cool stop and get it hot again. If you hit it to cold as Thomas said, you get a broom. Ask us how we know.

one thing i found out about brands, if you dont use or renew them after a period of time the are issued to someone else. at least that happened to me in arizona., so you have to be careful, they are like a trademark.
