I asked on here and there, I want a smith's input and maille makers input.
-
I'm saying A36 because it's the same stuff as what im using in the other thread, forge weld wont take. And someone said that it is A36.
-
Do you need a power hammer for forge welding?
-
Okay, so I'll see about a toaster. Will post my results. Another bit of info, I've been heating about 3/4 of the tool. And it always breaks almost exactly 7/8in of the way from the bottom. All 5 that have broken.
-
I've been looking through that, and what is the difference between butted chainmail and riveted chainmail. I can't find it on the site.
-
I've done a search and I found nothing for chainmail. I know the general way of making chainmail is to link rings together. Some people just use wire and sodder it, but I want to make it out of steel and forge weld it. I would like to know the best way of going about this, and the thickness of the steel that I should use, and if I'll need a jig to make the rings, other than bending it. And about the diameter of the rings.

I am using "weldable steel" from farm and fleet, A36 from what the other thread said. I am quenching in water. I was told to reheat to a red so that it does not become brittle, so your saying that I should temper in my mom's oven instead???? To like 500. I'll try that and see if it works better.
-
I've forged welded thicker steel together before, but this stuff melts before it welds. If you know what I mean. I can melt it, but I can't get it to stick together.

Okay, if anyone here does graphics, post a signature that you made or a smaller image. Give it a name and about when you made it and why. Here's Mine:
Nequinox
I made it about one month ago.
I made for myself and for a siggy contest on another forum, took second. -
M_brothers.
I have brother, and he likes blacksmithing with me. And Our last name starts with a M.
Otherwise, my name on all of the other forums is Nequinox.

Post pictures when you fire it up for the first time.

Like the find. That's a nice big piece of RR track.
-
Yes, I got so mad that I clamped it onto my makeshift anvil and took a 4lb hand sledge to it as hard as I could I ended up with a really bent up 7/16 6 in long piece of metal.

Try a hair drier, you can achieve forge weld temps and higher, and it's cheap.
-
Another question do any of you have a little sign above your smithy? What would be a goo motto or saying to have above a smithy?
-
The chisels and punches that I am making keep breaking in half or shattering. I quench them. Then I re-heat them to a red heat. I then let it dry. I don't understand why they are busting. I'm using them with hot steel. I use a graphite soap lube for the chisels and punches while forging.
-
I'm done using that steel, tried again tonight, same thing.
-
OKay. Will check into.

Post your blacksmith sayings or sayings that you've heard before. This should get interesting.
A Sign above a smithy read: Iron becomes a living creature in the dragon's lair. -
Okay, I am using charcoal. I bought this steel from Farm and Fleet, it says Mild Weldable Steel. I've forge welded other steel from Farm and Fleet that says the same thing. Where can I buy borax or flux from other than places like CentaurForge. Could I find it at a local Wal-Mart or Farm and Fleet? Thank-You all for your help so far.
-
Okay, will do Glenn.
-
Great Bellows.
-
Steel, Mild. I didn't use flux, just brushed it quickly. It remained hot. It just Won't weld.
-
I've been doing some searches, and I want to build a bellows. I want to build a small one and slowly make bigger ones. How would I go about doing this? Could anyone point me in the right direction or point me to some instructions?
where do you buy your steel?
