  1. I have a No.7 also. The main shaft is 4 1/2" dia and runs in a bronze bushing 12" long. If this had water in it it could be rusted solid. You may have to grind the shaft and make a new bushing. The crosshead could be in the same shape. The guides and ram would be the next concern. They could be heavily pitted from being wet and in close contact with each other. They could be remachined But it would take a big mill and expensive cutters to do it. It would be possible to do that by hand but it would take several days of hand scraping. I would go $1000.00 on it. If you send it out to get all the work done it would be expensive. If you can get this hammer running it is possible to draw out 30" tong handles in 1" round in one heat easy. I draw out 60" handles in 1 7/8" 4140 round in three heats. I can repoint a 6" round hoe ram chisel or draw a point on 1/4" round and everything in between. My hammer sometimes makes me $200.00 an hour! It is an awesome machine!
  2. Its called a drill sharpener used to repoint jack hammer bits and star drills. Is it for sale? Let me know. I may be interested. Danny
  3. For $3850.00 I am selling the best 50 pound Little Giant power hammer you will find anywhere. It is an old style made in 1907 Serial # 1157. Three sets of dies are included; 6"wide drawing dies, 3" X 6" flat dies with a tool holder, 2 1/8" X 6" flat dies and a bridge for forging rings and bushings. It has a brake allowing a single blow hit. The bearings are true and tight. The wood clutch blocks are in excellent condition. The height adjustment is very easy to use and it holds solid. All pins and links are tight. It has forged arms with an adjuster on both sides. The guides are are in very good condition. It has a wrap around front guide that I made and machined true so it bolts up without any fuss. The dovetails are in fine condition and hold the dies very solidly. It has a guard that covers the ram, arms and spring. The hammer has a treadle extension that allows the operator to stand with both feet flat on the floor. The motor is a 1 1/2 HP Baldor single phase 220/110 volt. It has a double V-belt drive. There is no removable sow block. The hammer is sitting on a solid oak foundation approximately 4' X 5' and 5' thick. This makes it possible to run it anywhere there is electric. I made this for doing a demonstration at a blacksmith conference. If you want it add $100.00 to the price. Clifton Ralph ran this hammer and asked "What did you do to this hammer? Its the hardest hitting 50# Little Giant I have ever used" I told him "I did just what you said to do to a hammer to make it better" Knife maker Billy Merritt was equally impressed when he used it during a weekend demonstration. The hammer has perfect control and a lot of daylight making it very handy for a wide range of work. I can load it on your truck or deliver it locally for free. Delivery up to 100 miles for $1.50 a mile. Email for more photos, or call Danny at 502-231-3880.
  4. I am rebuilding a 100# Erie steam hammer. I need to hone the cylinders that the throttle valve and the motion valve run in. That means I will need to build up the valve bodys and machine them to fit the larger cylinders. What should I build the bodys up with? Babbitt? Aluminium bronze? What should the clearence in the valve cylinders be. I will be running it on air. I am thinking of using 4140 turned, ground and polished to make a new rod. Erie originally used 4340 for the rod. What should I use for piston rings?
  5. I bet if you get the spray on insulation on the inside that would deaden it up real good.
  6. A friend of mine went to the junkyard looking for steel to build an air hammer. When he walked in the gate there was a 100 # Little Giant laying on it side that someone had just brought in. Needless to say he gave up on the air hammer project.
  7. Looks like an M&R Armitage Mousehole. If your a good welder and not afraid to offen Vulcan you can repair the face by arc welding with some rods made for forging dies. Welding forging dies is common practice in the forging industry. I have seen dies with at least 50 pounds of weld deposited in the cavity so they could be resunk. Contact a welding supply company for info on the differnt rods available.
  8. I may be purchasing a 100# erie steam hammer. At least I think its a 100#. The ram figures to be 67#, the top die 18#, add the rod and piston and I come up with about 100#. The hammer is about 8' tall. It has 3" X 6" dies and a 1" pipe inlet. My questions are; is there an opperating manual available. How much does it weigh? How much is it worth in good running condition? It has been sitting unused in an open building for the past 10 years. The roof did not leak but the hammer has plenty of rust. It looks like there are no missing parts. At the very least it will need the guides reground and a new rod. All of the controls are stuck. it colud need lots of internal rebuilding. How much is it worth now? Thanks for any responces. Danny
