  1. I found this at the scrapyard when looking for shapes. The shape I was looking for was round shapes and this just jumped out at me. Looked great for making bowls. Of course it needs a little altering, but it has a good base to mount in the vise and you can use it to form over or into. But what was it??? .....................Duck

  2. One more suggestion for the pile. Make the hawk handle out of ash or maple. Start with two pieces the have one long side planed flat. Then use anything on hand to make two cuts in a V shape on each piece of wood. Theis hole only needs to be the width of a straw so don't go too big, any hole with work. then glue the two flat pieces together with a large clamp, vise, plywood in a vise what ever. The point is the seam will not be shown if the edges are flat. Then file or shape the handle to suit. Many natives used this method for long pipe Hawk handles or for regular pipes. If the seams did show cover it with decorations. Short an simple fellas.................Duck

  3. Junior, I just had a quick chat with God and asked for healings for you and Cookie. He didn't say no so your healings must be on the way! I was just checking in from a friends puter and noticed your trouble and had to help. The snow up here is is the most I've seen since 1939 [the gov. says so] But the snow on my deck is past the door handle. Fair well, my friend...................Duck

  4. Jesus my brother, you love the little children and one of yours needs help. Send Ainslee your love and fill her with hope. Give the doctors the knowledge and skill needed to attain your goal. You said when two or more of your flock gather together you would hear our prayers and the chain of smiths is long. Together with our fathers love goes ours...Ahmen.

  5. Thank you all for your prayers, we arrived tues evening at the hospital in record time and in time. Our family held a 24 hour vigal till 5:39 am thursday morning. Our Maker has tested the Metal of his work, and finished the final tempering of his work. The Angels welcomed Jessie Hall their newest saint,to the choir and the sound is sweet to our Masters' ear. My daugther saw her at her memorial, and told me she was her smiling self; enjoying the gathering of relatives and friends.

  6. Your roses are wraped tighter than mine, but, mine have been sittin on a wall a long time. Once I had them made I put them back in the coal fire and watched for colour changes an hit the slack tub. I used 1/4 round stock for a stem and shaped the stem into a U hook with three leaves on the other end to mount on a wall. The cross bar held a quilt. I finished them off with clear urothane spray. I didn't get a kiss for mine did you?

  7. The way I see it its all deDUCKtable. How you get it to stick together maters less than what it looks like when finished. If the joints melt together and have a pleasing flow to the eye; how you got there maters little to the customer unless specified. If your friends have to walk to your party or drive in a cadillac suv you just want to see them come through the door with a smile on their face.

  8. Thanks for the encouragement welder19, haven't given up just yet; just mulling things around some more. Where i come from theres' two counts to answer at this point, 1. I am manufacturing an uncertified appliance (forge) and 2. will my insurance company still give me house coverage if something happens? I've witnessed a couple of instant combustions, one was 3,000,000 Btu boiler burp and shake a ten storey building. We had to replace a chimney top for a 18" ten storey chimney an some splannin to the local fire dept. There was a fault in a new boiler and we had to have it go through its sequence to find the fault. The foreman and I were sitting astride it at the time. any way the point was I have waltzed with gas before. Thats why I am asking lots of questions and checking tables. What pressure do you run your LP gas on and what size burner oriface? Thanks ...........Duck

  9. Thanks for all the comments guys. First off propane is only as safe as you make it. Pressure test it to what ever pressure you can achieve with air then leave it for an hour or more,(use a pressure installed on the line) and see if the pressure drops if it does check for a leak with water and a little dish soap using a small paint brush. If the pressure does NOT drop you did it right. From what I can guess from the comments, gas forges do not have any venting or chimney. So most gas forges should only be used outside. That being the case I'm thinking of building it like a boiler or pool heater with a chimney on the top. What is the usual pressure used on the propane and the size of hole on the burner? That will determine the right size of venting. Since I have a 7 in. chimney I will work backwards from chimney to the size of the burner and then see if that is big enough to heat the steel. Thats a lot of research and I still have not decided if it is workable. Your input on these ideas will really help, thanks guys.........Duck

  10. I have been puzzling the possibilities of making a gas forge in my cellar. I have 8 ft clearance cement floor and 2 ft thick stone walls. Since I'm putting in propane anyway and I have a 7 in chimney just stairing at me, what size vent do you use for a gas forge. Its warmer in winter than the wood barn. But my concerns are the dust in the house and fumes. Coal forge in the barn in winter aein't warm nuff.......Duck

  11. Heating suppliers should carry a lot of what is needed bricks cement and more. The cheapest fire brick I found was in old oil and wood burning furnaces. the bottom of old fireplaces have a one piece brick, a rectangle with the sides tapered at the top; same shape and size as the fireplace. The furnace bricks are very fragile, but can be cemented back together. You also get a round forge, but, check with the installers (fireplace & furnace)rather than the company, the price is usually better. leave them your number in a box of donuts or coffees and tell them what you need so if they don't have it they can watch out for it............Duck
