  1. WESCO anvil.  They appear in Canada from time to time.  I have 125lb and 100lb.  They are cast steel and of seemingly high quality. 100lb has 85% rebound. 125lb has 90%+ rebound and rings like a bell.  I have seen them @ 150lb and 200lb also.  Interesting is there is an industrial supply company called WESCO still in Surrey,BC on Anvil way - no idea if they made them at some point.  Good quality anvil.  Would love more info on them.   Very few seemlingu Canadian made quality anvils.

  2. Picked up what seems to be a peter wright in very good condition but no writing anywhere on it apart from a number 8 on the front right foot.  it broke my scale so not sure on weight - anyone have guess by dimensions?  From the way my back feels, it must be 300+?

    Height: 15"

    Face width: 5.5"

    Face Length: 21.25"

    Total Length: 34.5

    Thanks!

  3. The long flat anvils are for truing large bandsaw blades.  There are a few saw sharpening / repair shops near me and I have seen them in use (I pester them for 15n20, dogs head hammers,  and for their anvils...which pays off).  I have had a few of them pass through my hands keeping the largest one which is 4x12x48.  The ones I have had have all been hardened, though not as hard as your typical anvil face...I would say low - mid 40's?  they have all been cast steel, some with makers names / company marking cast into them.  I wish I knew the steel type.  I thought about cutting one up into sections and hardneing the faces to make anvils / swage anvils.

  4. Took it apart again, checked the female end with a light and nothing I could see.  It soaked over night in tool cleaner / rinse  - nothing in the box.  All threads look perfect on the male end.  It might have been my imagination that it closed fully as I had yet to use it.  It was a good deal  @ $125 for a 7" vise in good shape but its welded to its stand.  I took it apart as much as possible and wire wheeled the rust off.

Cut out a washer today and it fixed the problem - jaws close tight now.

Anyone have any idea what kind it could be?  I could find no markings in all my cleaning.

  5. Hello Folks - I am in the process of cleaning up a few post vises and wondering what to use on the screws when it goes back together?  The first one had some very old hardened grease that was work to clean off the male end and I was only part successful on the female end.  Its a 7" vise with a deep screw / closed end so could only go so deep with my makeshift tool.  I assume grease will only collect filings / scale and become an abrasive paste?

the other problem was putting it back together the jaws now have an 1/8" gap when closed...bah.  I thought I might have dropped some hardened grease into the bottom of the female end but its clear....hmm.

  6. #1 is a 140# "Wilkinsons & Co" anvil that popped up 3 blocks from me on craigslist. pictures make it look swayed but its 100% flat, good ring and rebound with very clean edges. I like the thick waist. Son was selling off his fathers old tools. Cost $200.

#2 I just picked this up the other day. Its a ~500# Band saw truing anvil. 4"x"12"x48" cast steel with a hardened top face. Just building a stand for it now - thought it would be useful in my bladesmithing. Cost - $150. Seller told me he had 2 and one went south into the US.

After these I think my luck has run dry. Any information on the wilkinsons would be appreciated as am not able to find much.

    Cheers,
