Not to drag up an dead subject, but I've been playing around with the weed burner idea too.
Could you compensate for the lack of oxygen in the chamber by adding a forced air setup?
I'm looking at the picture posted and wondering if I could build something like that as a starter forge. -
And the Mid Ohio Blacksmiths, MOB, was based out of Columbus Ohio; I saw a bunch of them while I was at Quad-State last weekend!
And one of them had had a bladesmith Hammer-In in a suburb of Columbus in June.
Send me an e-mail and I'll give you his address!
Also some of the old Mobsters are now involved in the Idea Foundry in Columbus.
Thanks for the info. I actually had my blacksmithing demo at the Idea Foundry. As for the Hammer-In, I believe that was in Johnstown, and I was given a flyer for it when I was at the Idea Foundry. That weekend turned out to be a bad weekend for me and I couldn't attend.
If you are referring to the guy I think you are. He lives about 2 miles away from me and I have his email address somewhere. -
That is simply amazing. Very wonderful piece.

Are we talking real anvils or homebrew anvils. I've got a chunk of rail road track that's been in a shed for probably 20 years. The "horn" looks like it was cut with a torch.
I'm planning on taking it down the road to a small machine shop and have them mill the top flat & clean. I'll post up some pics if anyone wants to see. -
Hi, I've been lurking around for afew days and finally decided to register. I've always been fascinated with blacksmithing since I was a kid and went to a living history village and saw the blacksmithing demo.
Afew months ago I had a chance to take part in a blacksmithing and knife making demo. I had a blast and that got me thinking about the practical aspects of actually creating a forge.
Anyways, I'm looking around my garage for donor materials for a forge. I've got an old propane grill that I was thinking about lining with some refractive materials. I also picked up a weed burner awhile back that I think could be modified with a venturi style intake. I'm basing this design on a washtub forge I saw on youtube awhile back.
As for materials, I'd like to start messing with knives and maybe eventually try making a sword. My main hobby is automotive, so I've got quite afew old coil and leaf springs from working on my 2 Jeeps. I'd like to use them as raw materials.
