  1. Thanks for that. I will try it when I am ready to heat treat.
  2. At what temp does the pressure start to fall off? My set up is in an unheat garage and from all the talk, I will have problems with gas pressure unless I find a way to warm the tank. What say you?
  3. Thanks everyone. The H61 is an Ampco marking. They still make the model but in a cross peen version. Their website verifies it as a scaling hammer. I contacted the company and they could not tell me any history on the double peen. They are the one's that told me it is a Bronze/Alum alloy. It is non-matellic, non-sparking hammer.
  4. Not sure if I am going to use it. It is made up of a bronze/alum alloy.
  5. The pics of the hammer. It is made of a bronze/alum alloy.
  6. We got them pretty hot. They were in the yellow range after a good soak in his gas forge. I was with a more experienced smith and we were using his 25lb little giant. They were 'J' shaped but with more bends. Next time I get some I will post pictures. They were gathered from a rail line in Maryland. The guy I got them from makes swords with them. He stated they were 1070 but they were hard to straighten.
  7. Does anyone know what kind of steel they are made off? I am working with one and it is tough. It does not want to move under the hammer.
  8. I have a double peen hammer marked H-61. I think it is made by Ampco. Their catalog only shows a single peen model. Can anyone tell me about this? Value? Uses? Thanks.
