just because they had cast steel dont mean that they used it. it was probably too expensive to use.
-
i personally would cut it in half(with a band saw), and weld it back together with real big S.M.A.W electrodes. then weld a piece of tooled steel( from your local scrap yard) on to the face using the same kind of electrodes.bevel the steel< not the tooled steel, nd clean it up, so that there is no space between it. just a thought...

thats made from a railroad track? how do u think that they made it? probably milled right.
-
my H.B had one i figured that a P.W would have one too... i found the name english weight, all that. its on the side not on the face...
-
ive searched for it over and over and cant find it.

$100 is a good price,I would not pay any more than that. I have been able to find several for $1.00 per pound or less. Two I did pay a little more than that for, one was a 50# fisher in new cond, the other was my first and was a 150# Haybuden for $200
haha. i have a bit of a soft spot for hay buddens. I think that u should maybe let it go to me :) -
We have an anvil in the shop at work from a bygone era, sits in a corner and I had wondered about it from time to time. I tapped it with a hammer a while back and had excellent rebound and a good ring. I recieved Richard P,s book in the mail today and quickly found out it to be a Columbian made in Cleveland Ohio. The C in the triangle and M on the other side, exactly like the one in our shop. It is interesting to me that there was a Columbus forge in of course Columbus Oh, can't help but wonder if the Columbia was wanting to get some advertising from a better known brand for the unknowing buyer, but upon further reading the Columbia may have been made by Hay-Budden. A marketing ploy??
i dont know. seems interesting, but id say not likely. hay-budden had no troubles selling their anvils. they already had a good rep. and lots of envious smiths that wanted one. its loke the leupold of rifle scopes... cept they arent as good as they once were.. -
Can you include a pic? Is "100" $100 price you paid, or 100LBS weight of the anvil.
already tried. cant seem to figure out cameras... or computers. it looks like most p.w anvils itsw size. -
i was guessing the weight. he actually gave it to me and sid that i could do a hundred dollars of work for him, and call it even it is eighty pounds.78.9 to be exact... what would yall pay for an anvil like that???

Well, lets just say that anyone rummaging around in my 130-year-old farm buildings for stuff is likely to really really really tick me (and my mastiffs) off, especially without permission.
My in-laws spent over 50 years dealing with folks making free on their farm with their flowers, their plants, and anything else not guarded with a large dog and a shot-gun. Apparently folks felt that since it was on a farm and not fenced in or locked-up then no-one owned it. Imagine people actually thinking that digging up flowers along your driveway was free stuff.
You might be a blacksmith if you store stuff in an old barn.
always ask fore i take anything. always ask permisssion before ,if any body has anything to do with the place in 20 years ,orso. -
hey yall,
i jsut aquired a new anvil, a peterwright. i would never sell it , but curious to know if i paid a good price. what would u guys say would be a good price for a guestimation of 100, not bad condition, fairly minor chip in the side. anything is apppreciated.
thx, willie -
those are some pretty good ones! Am I the only one that snoops through old buildings and such in search of blacksmtihng/antique tools???...
-
Im your man. i'd prefer to stick weld it though. I do a better job at stick welding. can you get it to clarksburg? If you can I can do it for free.
-
you might be a blacksmith if...
the only time you have ever been in trouble with the law is for trespassing in an old abbandoned barn.....again.
if you go to a fancy restraunt for your anniversary and you get in trouble with your wife for saying that you could make their shelve brackets, napkin rings, metal wall art, etc... better.
if your wife makes you take your clothes off at athe front porch... nto because she thinks that a workin man is sexy because she doesnt like the smell of coal...
if you think that they should make coal air-freshners, cologne, aftershave, etc...

whoah whaoah!!! you guys get suckers at your scrap yard??? My uncle owns the one i go to , and I still dot get a sucker!
I think that"ll Ill keep my HB. Im just not ready for that kind of quality. wow... I cant say that with a strait face... -
I recently aquired a champion 400 blower, and wire brushed it aup real nice. I just oiled it with the wd-40 and it looked real good. probably should paint it though.
-
Not sure about theh color scheme but painted black with letters highlighted is good. Gear oil is too heavy for these blowers. I use a 50/50 mix of 30wt/ATF. 20wt is good also. The revolutions are slow so there is no heat build up so really all you need is to make it slick.
Now you need to make something REALLY NICE for this friend! Good score
wifes christmas cookies will make him search the barn for anymore!!! -
sorry I didnt see the other sling shot ideas...
-
if you get sore from blacksmithing, or your wife "grounds" you from the forge you can always make abig sling shot... I got in trouble because I had some time, 4 foot 4x4's, bungees, leather, and the oaks beside the house prouduced good big acorns. I aimed at the cat and sang " another one bites the dust"...
