Tension, and friction. When you hit them to seat them onto the part they spring some,and bind up in the hardy hole.

Like doc said. I just used some 3/8 mild stock and quench in water. Super easy to make and pretty handy.

Oh ok so same as the one I made for my pritchel hole. I thought I saw a piece of thin rebar in the pic being used as some kind of pin for the one in the hardy, that was why I asked.
