  1. Thanks to Peggy for the poem, I enjoyed reading it. Both my kids liked it also!
  2. Hearts look great Ed. Next time do the hand/finger bottle opener.
  3. Hello Nice scrolling and nice dog photos. I live in Buhl and I am also a beginner. Kirk
  4. Hi Alec, I will come by and introduce myself! My son Creek (13 y.o.) and my daughter Lea (16 y.o.) also said they want to meet you and watch your demonstration. We are all beginners.

  7. Hello I just registered my family for the spring NWBA conference on Longview, Washington for April 26-28. I hope to meet some of you all there! Kirk
  8. Great photos, thanks for the post! I am a complete newbie sceduled for a week out there in 3 weeks. In other hobbies I have had a tendency to develope bad habits through self teaching. This time I decided to start off on the right foot with instruction on the front side. Your photos and report got me fired up. Thanks, Kirk
  9. I enjoyed working with metal and hammers as a kid on a cattle farm in the Ozark Mountains. At craft shows I would see Blacksmiths and had an interest since then. I never had the time or money. It seemed like an unrealistic goal to me then. More of a novelty. Recently my wife bought me a forged spacula at a coffee shop/bakery in Edison, Washington. That renewed the interest. Now, with the information available on the internet, learning about a topic or a potential hobby is easy. I also became interested in shaving with a staight razor several years ago. I got on line, learned about shaving technique, stropping, honing, and found a place to buy a razor. It was an easy process. The internet has facilitated a renewal in these type of ancient skills. Kirk
  10. Yeah Monstermetal, the edges are bad. That would be greaet if I could get back to your Dad's shop when your back in town. I would appreciate any help or insight I could get. Thanks, Kirk
  11. I thought the shiny edges looked welded also. I will leave them alone for now. Thanks for the help, Kikr
  12. Thanks for the welcome everyone! Stephen Olivo, I appreciate the comment on the "ringing" of anvils. I damaged my hearing too much with loud music when I was younger. I can't afford much more damage to them. Monstermetal, I spent some time with your Dad a couple of weeks ago. He is a very friendly guy! He showed me around his shop and showed my a lot of the pieces he has been working on. He told me about you and that you were a full time smith outside of Seattle. He also showed me a very nice hammer you had made him! I checked out your website. Very nice site and beautiful work!
  13. Hello everyone, My name is Kirk, a newbie from Buhl, Idaho. I just post on the introduction area, so I won't repeat myself here. I was hoping to get some opinions on what to do with the edges on my anvil I bought. It weighs about 250 pounds or so. The face is flat and it seems to have decent rebound and a decent ring. The edges are in bad shape though. I was considering using an angle grinder to smooth them out a bit. What do you all think? Thanks for any help! Kirk
  14. Hello everyone I am 47 years old and have wanted to try blacksmithing since I was a young boy growing up on a farm in the Arkansas Ozark Mountains. I was first exposed going to forging in Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. I am finally going to try it. I bought an old beat up English anvil, the edge is poor but the top is flat and smooth and it seems to have a decent ring. I am getting a gas forge in about 4 weeks and then it will be time to get to hammering! I have to say that one of the greatest benefits of the internet, to me, is site like this one. Fifteen years ago it would have been very difficult to figure out how to go about learning to blacksmith. But with the help of IFI and other educational site it makes it more approachable. Thanks for all the information! Kirk Peterson
