March 8, 200917 yr As a new blacksmith who has yet to build his first forge i was wondering about a couple things. 1) what is a decent hammer? i have heard that all i need right now is a flat hammer ie no grooves on the head. 2)the difference between a side-blast, and a bottom-blast furnace. thats it for now and thanks in advance for all the help.
March 9, 200917 yr For hammers i suggest ball peins from 12 to 32 or 48 ounces and cross peines from 2 to 6 pounds and a single jack or two. Claw hammers work for beginners but the face is usually too hard and the edges too sharp giving you those infamous PITA to grind out half moon dings. As for the furnace i think that ones fairly self explanatory.
March 9, 200917 yr welcome! ball pein hammers are usually easy to find. I know Lowes carries one cross pein hammer. Hit a local flea market, you'll be surprised what you'll turn up.
March 9, 200917 yr Welcome to the site, good to have ya! I found my first hammers at hardware stores and flea markets aswell. I personally did not like using a ball pein myself, but it's personal preference. And for forge info, just search the site, there is all kinds of info here.
