Leland Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 The gouge made for my son's Christmas gift has served part of its intended purpose and motivated him towards advancing his own smithing skills. Here is a knife my son made: Full-blade tang, slightly tapered towards the butt, zebra wood scales fastened with epoxy and brass rivets. AND my crafty little 14-year-old made himself a nice leather sheath to go with his new blade! Happy New Year everyone, Leland Quote
Ecart Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 The knife looks good. I always wondered how zebra wood would work as a handle. Quote
Flaming S Forge Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Looks like your young fellow is off to a good start. It is nice to see the young electronic generation get involved in the real hands on crafts. My son does woodworking. I keep bugging him to at least let me teach him some basic blacksmithing. Hopefully he will attempt it some time during my life time. Quote
NOS Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 Very good job! That is something to be proud of. It's nice to share a common interest with our kids isn't it  You guys keep up the good work in this new year! Quote
pjh66 Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 How old is your boy? Good to see the youg giving it a go Quote
MRobb Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 Great looking knife! You both should be proud. Keep up the good work. Quote
Leland Posted January 3, 2009 Author Posted January 3, 2009 (edited) My son's 15, and has been around craftsmanship all his life (well, the part he spends with me anyhow); he's picked much of this up through osmosis, I suppose. Flaming S, my son got tired of visiting Rockler Woodworking nearby and hearing me say, "The Bank of Dad is not funding your tool purchase, kid." Since said kid's no better able to afford the fancy cutting tools sold there than is the BoD, he's been inspired to continue smithing! Edited January 3, 2009 by Leland Quote
NuViking Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 That is a cool knife. A little scandi flair me thinks. Quote
Leland Posted January 7, 2009 Author Posted January 7, 2009 Wouldn't bet against that one, NuViking -- my little lawyer/anti-paternal-tyranny-activist spends a good deal of time poking around in various art books in my library and his; he decided on the shape himself. I know he has a fondness for all things Celtic -- not much of a lateral move from Nordic, eh? Quote
NuViking Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I read a little on teh history of that area too. So much intertwining for a few hundred years. A lot of celtic heratige here in Canuckland too. Quote
blafen Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Thats a nice knife there, it reminds of one i made a few years back as a christmas gift. Quote
