gene7
I have a old ferrers shoeing forge I am wanting to put into liminited use. It is in working order. The cast iron pan is stamped clay before using. I guess you are to lay down a layer of clay mix of some sort to protect the cast from the heat from the coals. I am look for some information reguarding this process
philip in china
Just line it with some clay. If you want to make a better insulator mix the clay with some chainsaw sawdust first.
Frosty
Welcome aboard Gene. If you keep the clay as dry as possible but still moist enough to pack it'll help limit shrink checking. (cracks formed as it dries) Then ram it in place with a wood mallet or the like and lastly score with a butter knife to control shrink checking. It'll crack anyway as it dries but scoring will make it crack where you want it. Think of it like expansion joints in a sidewalk. Lastly, if you'll click on "User CP" at the top of the page and edit your profile to show your location folk close to you may be able to lend you a hand directly.
