23 hours ago23 hr It’s been awhile guys! Busy summer. I recently made a woodworkers chisel from a coil spring that is very familiar to me. I have made many punches and hand tools from it, and always had very successful results in hardening. I tried hardening the chisel today, and I could not get it to work. I tried about a dozen times! I even turned it around a successfully hardened the tang. Not sure what to do! Any insight is welcome.
22 hours ago22 hr How much heating and beating did the blade end have before heat treating? And at what temps? Could you have decarbeurised it?

Could you have decarbeurised it?I don’t think so, we did some sledge work, but it was not super high heat. I did leave it to cool slowly in the forge for 2-3 hours, but I filed the edge in after that, and I thought decarberising only affects the out side layer. Wouldn’t I have filed off the decarberised layer?
21 hours ago21 hr Yeah, unless you're making sparklers/burning the steel, like too hot in multiple forge-weld passes. So, probably not that.Sorry, I'm not much help!
