March 2Mar 2 Hi all, Recently finished this 8 lb 12 oz forge welded 3 piece anvil. Here's a video on making it, let me know your thoughts
March 11Mar 11 Author That was a fun one, learned a ton since then. Definitely need to see about having another session at the farm
March 14Mar 14 If it helps, I was cheering and shouting instructions during the forge welds while watching. I had to remind myself that one, he can't hear you. Two, you're ticking your wife off. And three, he's likely the better smith between you two and almost certainly doing it better than you would in the same situation. Also, I've run into the quenching issue before with big items. Things that would normally be an oil quench steel don't harden well when there's too much mass to retain heat and I had to switch to water. It can backfire though - First hammer I made that way cracked on me behind the eye. I've done better with differential hardening when possible. Then again, I've yet to make one forged anvil (not counting stock removal), so you're far ahead of me on that. I definitely want to try it when I can stand up and walk for a decent period again. Few more months - I stood up long enough to cook ropa vieja Thursday and cleaned the kitchen/bathroom Friday and now my ankle is half again it's size again.
March 16Mar 16 Author Haha I don't know about being the better smith, I'm just obsessed with recreating old anvils. I hope the recovery goes well, we need more folks making these forge welded anvils as its such a lost skill, its insane to me how the making of something so fundamental to humanity's progression has so little literature and info on it. I hope one day to be good enough that I can make decent, good looking FW bench anvils that people can confidently work on. In the time I've had this one I've used it quite a bit for copper work.
