January 21Jan 21 Took a class at the Crucible (Oakland, CA) and it kind of hooked me. know gas welding and liked pushing puddles, so guess this was next step! On looking for info on forges - have a 40 gal water pressure tank that had a blow out, so looking at how to make it into a forge! See you all on the "build your own forge/burners" pages!
January 21Jan 21 Welcome, Doc! Glad to have you with us! If you haven't yet, please check out the "Read This First" page, which will give you a lot of good info on how to get the most out of the forum. As for making a forge out of a 40 gallon water tank, it depends on whether you're thinking of a solid fuel forge or a gas forge. You could certainly make a JABOD (Just A Box Of Dirt) forge to burn coal or charcoal, but it's much too big for a gas forge. Do some reading around the forum to get an idea of some of the options, and think seriously about (1) starting small and simple and (2) not reinventing the wheel. We're here to help.
January 22Jan 22 A few inches cut off one end would probably be the right size for the pan on a rivet-type coal forge. I've seen some made that way from water heaters.
