October 17, 2025Oct 17 On request and not to polute the "what I did in the workshop today" topic. I made a bird sculpture, the idea is planted in my head by my teacher as " I have seen this technique could be nice to try out" I made from 5 pieces of flat 40x6 with an length of 500mm that are forge welded together one end. Than I put fullers on the side starting from the middle. Make a loop, still with one end forge welded and the other end loose, so you end up with an e (in handwriting). Better is to go a bit further, it makes your live easier and prietier. Cut the loose end, so all 5 pieces are the same length and forge weld together. Now is also the time to sculpt one end since it is now still somewhat rigid and smallish. I sculped the beak+head of the bird and made it nice. When done, heat up the curve and untwist a quart turn or even a half. since now all pieces are locked togheter they deform and go side. I spend some time to spread the flats more evenly open and give it a nice flow of movement. The foot is made from a big piece, If my memory is correct (no notes of size) it is 100x 10 with a length of 400mm. I used a tenon connection and rivetted it over in the bottom. Better make it a square one, I was lazy and it can move a tiny bit. The idea was to make a "roerdomp" but you have to squint your eyes to see it
October 17, 2025Oct 17 Ah, all I needed was a different perspective and it represents a Roerdomp nicely. Better still it gave me something to look up and learn a bit about. Thank you. I have to disagree on one point though, this is anything but pollution. Frosty The Lucky.
