Anvil ID help?

Featured Replies

Good evening all.  I hope the fall is treating everyone well.
I just got back from another good weekend at the NWBA's Swaptoberfest.  Here's an anvil that a couple of us went in on (only $40, wo we also bought a few sets of tongs) for a young smith who can't afford to buy tools yet.
Anyone able to tell me anything about this?  Is there a reason for the 3 holes?  The best resource I've heard from so far has never seen one of these before and thinks it's a one-off.

It's a trailer hitch, the holes are for the safety chains. . .

Could put a shackle in the small hole and a stock through the middle one for an anchor?

You'd have to talk to the person who had it made or find the culture where it's from to know it's whats and whys.

It's pretty neat one though, I like it.

Definitely a cast anvil, did whoever you bought it from say what it's cast from, cast iron or cast steel.

Frostys  jest about the trailer hitch does actually make me wonder if it was something else that was repurposed into an anvil, or an ASO

Nope, they had no information.  This was obviously cast as is and from those with more experienced eyes, I was told that it was a good casting and whoever did it paid attention to whatever details go with that process.
