Ken Kelley
We have an old iron furnace here in Menifee County, KY. The Beaver Furnace Stack was built back in the late 1700's or early 1800's and was in use through the Civil War era. In the 1970's the Army Corps of Engineers built Cave Run Lake and it was supposed that the water would submerge the old furnace. Funds were made available to move the furnace to a different location and was disassembled. When the water didn't come up as high as predicted, interest in the project faded. The disassembled furnace still lies where it was built and a call has gone out for someone to spearhead a project to reassemble this piece of history. I am starting the initial research on this effort and I would love to hear from anyone who can give me any hints on what is involved in a project of this nature. Thanks, Ken Kelley Indian Creek Forge Frenchburg, KY
nett
Here's a good history of the furnace from the 'The Kentucky Explorer Magazine' by Roger Keith. A good read. 03-01story Ideas for a restoration project? I got nothing, and no idea where to start, sorry. Maybe Roger Keith could be helpful, his contact address is posted in the article. Ken Kelley
Thanks for the article. That appears to be the very furnace I'm talking about. I'll contact Mr. Keith. K
