IronMarbleMason
First off nice to meet everyone I am new to this stuff but I just picked up my first true anvil and I was hoping for some help on identification. I can make out the weight markings 1.1.4 and advertised as 180 I am under impression it is 144# it has flat bottom and came from New York, I believe around Syracuse and that's what I know. ThomasPowers
First off discard impressions and weigh it on a bathroom scale! Ask seller why they didn't! Look like an English anvil and the weight would be in the CWT system 1x112 + 1x28 + 4 = 144. Probably a few pounds shy of that nowadays. If it is an older English anvil and you can't read the stamping; well there were over 200 english anvil makers many of them making almost identical anvils as a person would learn the trade in one shop and then set out on their own and make anvils that look just like the ones they learned on. Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Welcome from the Ozark mountains. If it passes the ring & rebound test it's a good one no matter the make. I hope you have read about not doing any grinding, milling or welding on the hardened steel face. Trying to improve the face usually does more harm than good.
