August 2, 200817 yr Does anyone know what the scale that comes off of metal is made up of? Just thought about that last night, and I figured I would ask you guys.
August 2, 200817 yr Iron oxide. It's still magnetic so it's easy to collect and is the same material they used the Fuzzy Face
August 2, 200817 yr I've heard it called super rust or super scale because it forms so fast in the fire. Some wire brush it all off and others leave it on and oil it so it protects the metal better but I don't know if that is true.
August 3, 200817 yr It's iron oxide, and I think it's mostly magnetite (Fe3O4) as opposed to rust (Fe2O3), which gives it the ferromagnetism nett was talking about.
