Okiepan,

The first thing I would do is to check the area behind the fan. It is a prime place for mice and mud dobbers to build nests. Then the next thing is to take the gear cover off and soak the insides with kerosene or a 50/50 mixture of Dexron I or II automatic transmission fluid and acetone overnight. Then gingerly try and rotate the gears and crank. Do all of that before taking it apart any further because nine times out of ten gunk is the problem.
