Firebox

Featured Replies

What thickness of mild steel would members suggest for a firebox? This is for a welded firebox, unlined and designed for a coke forge.

cheers.

Welcome to IFI, Smokeyred. If you haven't yet, please READ THIS FIRST!!!

This is more properly a question for the Solid Fuel Forges section of the forum, and I'm sure one of the moderators will move it there. There are a number of other threads there about building firepots, so I would suggest taking a look around for the recommendations made there.

3/8” seems ideal, that’s about what my old Champion cast iron on was.

If you are burning coke and not coal, would you not want a deeper fire pot than illustrated in that pic (3”)?

I only tried premade coke, as opposed to my usual bituminous coal, a few times, but it seemed like I really had to force feed it air.

3” seems like you’d still be in the oxygen rich zone of the fire.

5” deep was what I was planning. Thanks for the comments.....I’ll use 3/8 for the fire pot.
