Epoxy allergy

Featured Replies

Do any of you know of a good alternative to epoxy. I have developed a sensitivity to it and if I come in contact with it my face swells and starts weeping. I have tried tyvec suit and full face masks with respirators. I need something else that will hold up.

Thanks in advance for any advice

There are many other bonding options on the market, Which of those you could use would likely depend on what you were doing and where you are.

For this project, I am stacking brass, leather, elk antler, and bloodwood on the tang to make a handle, I'm in Colorado. I've always used epoxy but the last time I did I couldn't see out of my left eye for a week.

Welcome aboard Bdstaoro, glad to have you. If you'll put your general location in the header you might be surprised how many of the gang lives within visiting distance.

There are a number of types of Epoxy. The term refers more to the type of molecular chains it make upon setting than a specific chemical make up. Regardless allergies are not something to take chances with if you can avoid it. You might want to talk to a doctor.

Have you tried polyester resins? While not as strong as epoxies it's still darned strong as an adhesive but is commonly available in more types, Casting and impregnating resins are easy to find. Art supplies are the better place to find casting resins. However I think I'd use an impregnating resin to make your stack of handle materials one piece.

We won't remember this once leaving this thread, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to include your location. I would consult an allergist about it.

BTW Welcome...
