November 27, 20178 yr Saturday morning after many months of searching I found this old fatter. I paid it just 1€ and the face was quite good but the botttom was badly mushroomed. I started grinding it but I discovered that there is a crack... it doesn't seem too serious anyway. what should I do? weld the crack and grind it again to close it?
November 27, 20178 yr Depends what methods/equipment and skill set you have, I'd grind the crack out and then arc weld the the ground slot to fill, then regrind the face. I dont think it will need any heat treatment other than to let it cool slowly.
November 27, 20178 yr Author I have a stick welder with inverter. 190A max... and I can weld like an hobbyst... to avoid heat treatment problems I can put the face of the flatter in a plate with some water and weld the buttom. I already used this method and it works great.
November 27, 20178 yr I'd advise not welding around water.....! you should not generate so much heat welding the struck end to effect the working face and the struck end needs no hardening. just stand it on a metal heat sink to weld if you feel you need to but no water.
