I Forge Iron

Champion 400 forge

Recommended Posts

Just picked up this Champion 400 with a nice 400 blower.  Cleaned up with a wire brush, ready to paint.  My question, do I clay the cast pan?  It does say "clay before using". I don't want to crack it, it will be kept indoors.

i assume I don't clay the actual firepot?  I cracked my rivet forge,  no clay, so I'm a little gun shy.

Thanks,

Duane

Welcome to ifi Duanen. Like Thomas said thin hard firebricks set in clay will keep the forge from cracking and raise the table to the level of the firepot making it easier to rake coal or charcoal in. If you don't have a source for fire clay, a bag of cheap unscented kitty litter (clay) with a little sand and water mixed in good will do the job, just work it to a stiff consistency.

BTW: nice forge you have there.
