Britishiron
Hi All, just broken my back rescuing this beauty from a farm in Newcastle UK. long time since I've been on the site, forgive me guys, but can anyone tell me anything about this anvil? It's a homer and mountford, says *BEST* (I assume that means it's a decent casting but not sure) Does anyone know what the 7.5 means? I've consulted the guide on here but I'm no wiser, I assume it's at least 3 1/2 cwt. many info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
John McPherson
Several makers had a "Standard" grade and a "Best" grade for fit & finish: how parallel the top and base were, how square the hardy and pritchel hole were, etc.
ThomasPowers
Not to mention the "Best grade of Wrought Iron".
Britishiron
Thanks guys, I'm struggling to find anything about homer and mountford accept the fact they they were bankrupt in the 1880's, do you you guys think the shape of the anvil would be consistent with this date? Thanks
ThomasPowers
it's consistent for about a 100 year period that includes 1880.
