swamary
I have an old snow blower blade. Does anybody know if that would make decent steel to practice making a knife?
ThomasPowers
Is it your belief that every snowblower manufacturer for the last 50 years have all used the same alloy for their blades? Not a bet I would take! Anyway "junkyard rules" apply: you have to test an unknown alloy: First do the spark test and then do the heat-quench-break test. They should tell you if it's blade worthy steel and start you down the road to testing what heat treat it needs. If you don't want to test---buy known steel! Thanks, I will do those tests before I use it.
