Dano83 Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Brought a ridiculously heavy stump home from work for my anvil stand, I have it buried about a foot in the ground. My only concern is that it may be a touch high. Real sturdy though! Quote
ThomasPowers Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 First picture, foreground: orange stump height adjuster; or you could rout a recess in the top of the stump to hold the anvil and shift it down a bit, or you could build up the ground around the stump, or.... What height is it at in reference to you? Quote
Dano83 Posted April 2, 2017 Author Posted April 2, 2017 I'm in the process of building a new forge so it'll be a bit before I give the anvil a good test. It might be a good height, about waist high I suppose. Quote
ThomasPowers Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 If you stand up straight next to the stump and you let your arm dangle relaxed where is the top of the anvil wrt your arm? For me for fine work, (blades, small ornamental work, etc) I find that the top of the anvil should be around my wrist. For heavy work with sledges for me it should be down around my knuckles to midway between my knuckles and my finger tips. The true test is: does your natural swing hit the face of the anvil flat? Can you work all day without bending over to see better and so can you work all day without your back hurting afterwards? Quote
