PaulKrzysz
Here's a video of me making a pair of tongs from flatbar. I have made two sets of tongs this way, and will not make any more. The twist, being between the jaw and boss, is the weakest section of the tong. This is not good because it should be strong to match the boss and boss/rein transition. It's not any more work to make tongs from roundbar, so from now on I will not longer employ this method. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gndi-rddOak
arkie
Paul, nice job on the tongs. I have made several twist-type tongs from flat bar, similar to yours, but see no apparent weakness. Using the method similar to yours (aka "Dempsey Twist"), the fuller is only about 1/3 deep and rounded rather than the deeper, pointed fuller you make with the power hammer. I would be afraid the pointed fuller might lead to a cold shut. I used 3/8" x 3/4" mild steel bar.
