Hi everyone.

I feel rude asking for help on my first post, but I hope this can double as a introduction post.

I've been doing a bit of smithing, but i have really been struggling with the piece of rail iron I use as an anvil. I live in NZ and there are plenty of chinese ASOs around, but very few big forged anvils.

I found this while i was lurking of trademe (new zealands ebay). It claims to be a Peddinghaus, but i couldn't help but notice that the pattern didn't look German at all.

I could be completely wrong.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Staticat - welcome to the forum. We've got a few folks from down your way, we suggest people edit their profile to include their general location.

Well it is certainly a german anvil. Though I'm no expert in identifying the German anvils. The hardy hole near the horn and lack of pritchel are give aways. Looks like a decent anvil to me, though I have absolutely no idea what anvil prices are like in NZ, if you can afford it then go for it.

It's a decent enough size to be perfect for just about everything you would want to do.

It's hard to find a picture on the web - I've seen them while looking on the German eBay for a double horn for myself.

http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general-archive/anvil-recommendations-85-110-lb-size-81202/#post103820 - this shows a single horn peddinghaus on post no. 4.

Best of luck

Andy
