I Forge Iron

best steel for forging nails

Recommended Posts

Thanks Frosty & John. Those methods sound better than what I tried this afternoon. I got a few bolts with big heads for dies (about 1" across) and drilled a shallow depression in each one. Then I got some high tensile steel bolts about 1/2 diameter and cut a pattern into them. Heated the big bolts to yellow in the forge and then stamped in the pattern and hardened. I also did one using an old drill chuck key and one with a cut down countersink tool.
I then made a few nails and tried to stamp the pattern onto the heads. (Had to reheat the heads). Not very successful but I will make further trials. Perhaps it's easier to chisel a pattern by eye directly onto the hot nail head. Anyone have any pics of decorative nail heads you've made??
