John Martin
Is Cast Iron useful??? At all? and if so for what? From what I've heard, you don't want it for forging.
primtechsmith
One of the smiths around here uses cast iron in the forge when making temporary punches and chisels. He has broken bits that he rubs onto mild steel when hot(both the cast iron and steel piece) to create a more durable tool. He says it lasts maybe upto 6 uses before it has all flaked off. Sure cuts down on use of high carbon steel when you need a tool only for a short while. I have never done this but it sure sounds cool. Frosty
I've heard of this, it's a method of case hardening and needs to be done at near welding heat. I've never tried it either, I can afford a little tool steel if I can't scrounge it honestly. Frosty
