Firepot for charcoal forge

Hi

I was wondering if I could get any suggestions on what to use for a firepot on a charcoal forge. I've been researching an don't think that a break drum will be deep enough (please correct me if I am wrong). I am also on a tight budget so I cant buy a commercial firepot.

Thanks,

Sam

You could deepen a brake drum by stacking fire bricks around it. Also, I recommend lining the bottom with clay to make it less cylindrical and more tapered like commercial coal fire pots. Look at commercial fire pots from Centaur Forge or other similar places, and then try to imitate the shape, but a little deeper.

Even better, cast one out of refractory cement, or weld one up out of steel.

I don't recommend side draft, personally. I couldn't get that setup working decently.
