Anvil identification

Recommended Posts

Hi can anyone help to identifiy this anvil?

I live in the UK and have been offered this anvil, the guy is 79 years old and he rembers his father bringing it home when he was around 10.

It is around 25" long and 5" wide and stands 15" high I cannot find any markings on it.

It looks preety well used although the is no big chunks missing.

It has sat in his garden for the last 40+ years.

any advice would be appreciated.

Postman has identified over 200 anvil makers in England and many of them made quite similar looking anvils---often because they worked at one factory and then went off and started their own factory and "made what they knew".

Without markings you are adrift in guessing.  Here in the USA Mousehole was one of the brands heavily imported and so such a "guess" has a good chance of being right---but I have a Powell and a William Foster both found in the USA and so it's not 100%

Don't have a guess as to who made it, but it looks to be in good shape and if the offered price is right, take the gentleman up on it. Give the old girl a new home and put it back to work.

I hear other 'working' anvils laugh at gardening anvils, they say it is shovel and hoe's work....
