I Forge Iron

Thoughts on this Anvil

Recommended Posts

Looks like a nice serviceable anvil.  Good price.  I wouldn't worry about the side clip horn.  From what I can see it was arc welded on.  It being gone is no loss.   Bottom line I would have bought it.

Looks like an old english style---thick waist and sharp feet.  Face looks decent. It's well worth the price if it passes the bounce test.  The small side horn was often seen on carriage builders anvils for making clips.  As it was originally forge welded on it may have fallen prey to a missed heavy hammer strike.

Personally I like anvils that have non-functional damage---lowers the price substantially without lowering the usability!

The anvil is a William Foster, picture 8 in the listing show the side with some letter of the name visible what looks like 1848 (Foster dated them). The face and edges look plenty good for use. Price is up a bit, but could still be reasonable. Good luck.
