March 4, 201313 yr I just recently acquired a coal forge with blower. It had sat outside long enough for the two sickle bars, that were laying on it. To have been completely grown inside of a 18" tree. My question is, what to use in replacement of the lead bushing, on the crank handle?? Other question is what is the maker? It has "1075" on the casting, in raised letters.
March 4, 201313 yr Any body with a small metal lathe can probably cut a couple of bronze or oillite material bushing for you.... Just have to remember a drop of oil once in a while... Dale
March 5, 201313 yr If your "bushings" look like lead they are probably not either. It is most likely a Babbitt bearing. You may find it difficult to install a bronze bushing into an opening that was made for a poured bearing. Then again it might not be hard at all depending on how the bearing support is made. Pictures would help!
March 5, 201313 yr Author I'll try getting one tonight when I get home. If a person took a rod, the same size as the shaft. Could you pour a new bearing back into it???
March 6, 201313 yr Greetings Greatwhite... Babbit material melts wll below 600 You can clean all the areas , preheat the casting , fill the hole Melt babbitt with a torch , let cool and drill to the shaft size.. You can find babbit material on line... not hard at all Good luck Jim
