He was a monumental mason and his appretices used to have to break up marble into chippings on it to use for graves. It was used in this way right up until the 60's. doc Posted January 27, 2013 Share Posted January 27, 2013 That anvil is much older than your Grandfather. It is what is termed in Postman's book as a "colonial" anvil. It's having no pritchel hole and of the early English pattern would date it pre-1830's. I would say it is very very good condition as well. Almost looks like a Mousehole brand, although there were many manufacturers of anvils around then. If you clean the side with the horn to the right, you might find some markings of the maker.
