BigCotton89 Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 I decided to try a spear head the had a stone look to it. it's not done but here is what I have of it. While I will be finishing this out in a while the main reason for this post was to demonstrate my saltwater etching system because I told some folk I would so here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcN62PqZqhA Quote
BigCotton89 Posted January 25, 2013 Author Posted January 25, 2013 It's just vinyl like you would make a sticker for a car window with. You should be able to get sheets of stencils made at ups or fedex but that can be a bit pricey but you do get a lot of the stencils that way. If you can go to a local sign makers shop like I did you might be able to get smaller quantities for a little bit cheaper but if you're willing to invest about $20-$40 you can get a whole sheet of stencils cut. The one thing I will caution you of is that you wan the negative of your logo or just get it without any of the vinyl pulled off. Quote
Bentiron1946 Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 Looks like you did a fair job of imitating the pressure flaking of a lithic artifact. Quote
BigCotton89 Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 All hand done by cheap walmart needle files. for one of the most simple looks it was a pain to do. I just need to decide now what kind of shaft to put it on. Any suggestions? Quote
BigCotton89 Posted February 2, 2013 Author Posted February 2, 2013 I finally finished my spear aside from a few finishing touches. Got it set in a hardwood handle with a rope wrap at the top and at the balance point for a grip. I also sandblasted the spear head and got a very realistic stone look and texture so all in all I'm pretty happy with it. I decided to spice it up a bit by putting an Ozark mountain turkey feather in the top wrap purely for aesthetics and I'm pretty happy with it. I do realize now that the spear head it's self is a little small but it still looks good and I was just making it to make it so I wasn't going to make it bigger and redo all of that hand filing. It is what it is. Quote
switchjv Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Sandblasting the blade really gave it a great look. I'm going to have to try that. Quote
BigCotton89 Posted February 4, 2013 Author Posted February 4, 2013 I'm not sure what medium we were using I think it was a fine silicon carbide. but it gave it a realistic stone look and feel Quote
