I Forge Iron

363lb (Or 371lb) Peter Wright.

So I managed to beat the snow today heading up to VA, buying my 3rd Anvil. Anvils surely are addictive to own by nature. Now I have one that I can surely have the rest of my life, and its now the big papa to the 106lb. Peter Wright I also own. Unfortunately the rain and now snow has kept me from pulling out the forge tonight to test it out, but tomorrow in heck or high water I will do some pounding. I nabbed this gem from Pete Buchanan, who by the way was a very stand up smith, with a ton of knowledge and a generous spirit. Will certainly hang out with Pete again. We had problems making out the first stone number, but based off of the dimensions it is estimated to be 363lb.

I rubbed baby powder all over it, and could make out the top of a number, which looked like the top of a 3. I then used this neat Stone Weight Calculator I have for my phone found here: http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/26724-anvil-weight-calculator-for-android-phones/?hl=%2Bstone+%2Bweight#entry271206  and "3" "1" "7" came out to 371. Hefty indeed!

I was also informed that this is a very early version of Peter Wright anvils. Certainly an awesome anvil, with around 85% rebound when dropped 1ft with a 1" HC ball bearing. Also forgot to mention the bevel on on side of the face. I think it will actually come in handy. Pretty unique.

Yea, with baby powder I was able to make out Peter Wright and a few other letters, including the stone weight. Very interesting indeed Stewart. Nothing like getting such a beautiful tool and have at least 30 years of history to go with it. Thanks a ton man.

Just spent 5 hours straight on this bad boy. It is really something else being able to use all of that real estate, and that rebound! Turning 3/4" rebar into a carpenters holdfast and a 1060 RR clip into a bottom fuller for this new size (forge wleding together and drawing down this time.).

Couldn't be happier.
