November 14, 201213 yr I bought this anvil recently for $100. The only markings I could find were the three stamped symbols on the front foot and the 0-3-0 on the side. Any help is greatly appreciated. The anvil has very good ring and rebound.
November 15, 201213 yr 84 lb English pattern anvil, I can't help you more than that without some other markings. Maybe some others can do better.
November 15, 201213 yr Hi utaholdiron, Based on unique shape of the legs, and the steeper angle of the heel underside, I would say it looks like a Wilkinsons. You can see some photos of my Wilkinsons, to see what I am talking about:http://www.iforgeiro...9179-lucky-day/ However, my Wilkinsons does not have the stars stamped in the front (below the horn). Also, yours does not appear to have the Wilkinsons name and other markings stamped in the side, as mine does. Is there any way you could post larger photos? All the best Markus
November 15, 201213 yr Author As a rule I hate posted pictures that haven't been re-sized, but in this case it may show some faint markings so here goes.
November 16, 201213 yr There are some interesting short straight lines under the 3 in the middle of the woodpecker marks on the first picture
November 16, 201213 yr Author I can't see what you're referring to, all I see is a faint image of The Virgin Mary.
November 16, 201213 yr I'm going to say it's a Wilkinsons. In your enlarged photos (thanks for posting) it looks like there may have been some writing on the right side (assuming horn is the 'front') however it is too marked up from use to tell. And, those legs... again I am no anvil expert, but Wilkinsons are the only ones I have seen with that style. This may not be a diagnostic feature, but I think it might be... sort of like Peter Wrights have the flat parts on the front and back. How does the anvil ring? Can you describe the sound? Regards, Markus
November 16, 201213 yr Author Markus, the ring is high-pitched, almost hurts my ears if I tap a hammer on the horn.
November 16, 201213 yr Is it long or short? Like a pinnnnnnnnnggggggg or pink or tink or ... ? What if you tap on the heel? Markus
November 17, 201213 yr The same way I'd describe the ring on my Wilkinsons. Chances are good that's what you have, based on appearance and sound. Maybe some wire brushing on the side will reveal some more markings? Markus
