October 17, 201213 yr I'm just getting into black smithing and what not and I was wondering if a wheel barrow would make a good forge, the reason is it would portable so I could move it in and out of the garge. I'd like some insight into what you guys think?
October 17, 201213 yr A shallow pan metal wheel barrow would provide a reasonable pan for a forge. Install an air tube/ash dump, clay the bottom and that should make a serviceable arrangement. EXCEPT it is goint to be real low and may/will likely prove to be an inconvenience if not a pain in the back dring longer forging sessions.
October 17, 201213 yr Before you invest money in anything, join a local blacksmithing group and try out equipment that other folks have. That way you will have a better feeling for what type of forges and equipment works for you.
October 17, 201213 yr take a look at the Tim Lively wash tub forge as used by the neo-tribals smiths. Then think of mounting it on top of a discarded propane grill cart. Easy to move and at a better height! Of course it's designed for charcoal. You could also set a brake drum into a sheet of plate on the grill cart and make a coal burning one---or as I do have the plate installed where the grill used to be and mount my propane forge on it.
October 18, 201213 yr PBS had a series some time ago called Forge and Anvil. In one of the first episodes the host made a forge out of a wheelbarrow and parts you can find at a local hardware store. It seemed to work very well and a easy project for someone with basic tools to accomplish. The DVD's are still available for sale.
